Hills, Peanut Kisses, Tarsiers, Loboc River Cruise, Panglao Beach… All
these point to the City of Peace and Friendship
that is Tagbilaran City. Most
people will likewise be reminded of the Sandugo
(One Blood) or Blood Compact Shrine
near the city’s
outskirts. This bronze monument depicts
the life-size statues of Spanish explorer Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and Filipino
local chieftain Datu Sikatuna sealing in March 1565 their bond of peace and friendship with a blood compact, an original
Filipino tribal tradition. The landmark
shrine is a highly-touted masterpiece of sculpture created by the Boholano
sculptor and National Artist for Sculpture, Napoleon Abueva.
recent memory is the Magnitude 7.2 earthquake which jolted Central Visayas,
notably Cebu City and Tagbilaran in October 15, 2013. Until
today, Tagbilaran continues to rise from the massive ruins of that fateful
catastrophe. One such sign of
infrastructure progress is the new Bohol Panglao International Airport
inaugurated last November 27 this year.
It is the first eco-airport harnessing solar power for lighting and
hot-water supply systems. The new
airport was built at a cost of P8.9 Billion,
