According to Wikipedia, the name of the capital town of Camarines Norte was derived from the Bicol word dait-daitan which means “close to each other,” a characteristic feature in the thriving settlement of Daet during the Spanish times emphasizing the town’s long-held tradition of always clustering together for safety and protection. Daet holds the distinction of being the first town in the country to erect a monument in honor of the National Hero Jose P. Rizal. This historical landmark was unveiled on December 30, 1898, or exactly two (2) years after Rizal’s execution.

Considered to be the center
of commerce and industry in the province of Camarines Norte, Daet is likewise
the epicenter for its famous Pineapple Festival (or “Pinyasan”
as it is called by the locals), the most colorful festival in Camarines Norte. The festival started in 1992, and is about
the province’s prime agricultural product, the “Queen of Formosa”
pineapple. Noted for its sweetness and
flavor, this kind of pineapple is produced only in Camarines Norte, thereby
making it a specialty in the province. The Pineapple Festival is held annually
in the month of June.
