In the beginning, it was called Tejero. Then it was re-named Salinas. Still much later, it was known as Marcella or Marcelles. Presently, the town’s name is Rosario, in honor of its patroness, Nuestra Señora Virgen del Santissimo Rosario, Reina de Caracol (Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary). For purposes of historic recall, all three previous names of the town are still retained as the town’s more noted street names. Salinas is likewise the popular alternate name of the town, bannering the town’s finest and famous smoked fish product, the Tinapang Salinas.
Although considered the second smallest town in the province of Cavite, Rosario has risen to become one of the province’s “biggest” municipality in terms of the town’s progressive developments in its social, cultural and economic horizon.
Owing to its abundant fishing grounds and the presence of the Rosario Fish Port, fishing is a natural major economic concern of Rosario along with predominant cottage industries related to fishing, e.g. smoked fish (tinapa) processing, fish drying (daing), fish paste (bagoong) making, fish sauce (patis) making and canning,
The present development by the Philippine National Oil Corporation’s (PNOC) 134-hectare property into the special Cavite Economic Zone augurs well for the town. Development prospects are seen with the inclusion of an industrial estate, low-cost housing and a new port facility.
Already, commerce and financial services have been made manifest by the establishment of the SM City-Rosario by the mall giant.
