Although considered disastrous, two major events in 1991 gave rise to the present-day character of Olongapo City – the catastrophic eruption of Mt. Pinatubo and the subsequent withdrawal of the US Naval Base from the place.
Unfazed by the devastating effects of the two events, the City took stock of its resources, went on auto-pilot mode and, with an organized strong corps of 8,000 volunteers, launched an aggressive economic impetus program resulting in the accelerated development of their “Sin City” effectively transforming it into the Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBFZ), a prime industrial and tourism zone in the country. The abandoned US Naval Air Station at Cubi Point has metamorphosed into the modern-day Subic International Airport.
Olongapo City is recognized as a Business Friendly City. Among several notable awards, the city has been cited for its outstanding performance in its local health programs along with its best-run City Hospital.
